Sarıçam Municipality Indoor Swimming Pool
Location: Adana, Turkey
Year: 2026
Status: Ongoing

Located in the Sarıçam district of Adana, the Sarıçam Semi-Olympic Indoor Swimming Pool was designed as a comprehensive sports facility serving different age groups and user profiles. With a total construction area of 3,745.5 m², the building consists of two main levels the ground floor and first floor as well as a partial basement.
The site’s natural topography was treated as one of the primary inputs shaping the project’s spatial organization. The level differences across the site were integrated into the design, allowing direct access to the building from different elevations. As a result, both the ground floor and the first floor are accessed directly from their respective levels. This approach strengthens the relationship between the building and the terrain while also facilitating circulation for different user groups. Broad stepped outdoor areas, where the level changes merge with the landscape, form a public open-space system that reinforces the civic character of the entrances.
At the center of the facility, the semi-Olympic indoor swimming pool defines the building’s primary spatial and structural character. In addition to the main pool, the program includes a children’s pool and a separate therapeutic pool designed to serve the rehabilitation needs of elderly users. Supported by fitness, spa, and therapy areas, the facility extends beyond a conventional swimming complex to create an integrated center combining sports, health, and recreation.
A hybrid structural system combining reinforced concrete and steel was used to span the large volume of the main pool hall. Controlled openings and skylights integrated into the façade and roof were designed to bring daylight into the pool area from different directions. This strategy allows the large interior volume to benefit from natural light while creating a changing spatial atmosphere throughout the day.
Athlete and press areas are positioned around the entrance at ground level and organized around an internal courtyard. The courtyard acts as a spatial focal point, establishing visual connections between different functions while bringing daylight deeper into the building.
By integrating topography, natural light, public accessibility, and a diverse range of sports and wellness programs within a single architectural framework, the Sarıçam Semi-Olympic Indoor Swimming Pool aims to serve not only as a sports facility, but also as a multifunctional public space where different user groups can come together.
